Introduction To The FAQ for Forum Features

Welcome to the Frequently-Asked-Questions section for the features of the Shadow Stars forums! This FAQ is designed to provide assistance to anyone who needs help around the SHS forum's features.

The Shadow Stars forums is hosted by ZetaBoards, so many features of the SHS forums go by the ZetaBoards standard. If you were previously a member on another site, which was also hosted by ZetaBoards, then it's likely that you already know your way around many of the features listed here in this FAQ. However, there are some features at SHS that you will find yourself new with, and they are explained here in this FAQ.

For ease of access, the explanations have been titled to match the names of the features they describe, so all you have to do is look at the table of Contents, which is at the very top of this article, and look for the name of the feature you need help with.

Walk-though 1 - Avatar1

The "Preferences" tab is always below the banner in the "Modern (SHS '10)" forum skin. For "Classic (SHS '08-'09)" forum-skin users, the "Preferences" tab is always found above the banner.

NOTE: About the "Preferences" tab

The "Preferences" tab is where you go to modify your account's profile. With the "Preferences" tab, you can customize your profile in many ways, such as adding an avatar, adding images and text to your profile's signature, adding information, and deciding on various options that affect how you view the Shadow Stars forums. The location for the "Preferences" tab is shown in the image to the right.

Updating Your Profile

In this section, you will find information on changing avatars, adding things to your signature, and many other things you can do to update and customize your profile at SHS.

Where to find this section on SHS: Preferences >>> Update Profile

Shortcut to changing your Avata'r: Preferences >>> Change Avatar

Shortcut to changing your Signature: Preferences >>> Change Signature

Changing Your Avatar to a Pre-Set Avatar

1) Go to where Preferences is located on the forum page, and then hover your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

2) Click on "Change Avatar" in the small menu that appears after hovering your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

3) Click on one of the five folders that appear on the page: "Air Squad Avatars", "Earth Squad Avatars", "Fire Squad Avatars", "Misc. SHS Avatars", or "Water Squad Avatars. While certainly not required, it's recommended that you click on the "Misc. SHS Avatars" folder if you are currently not in any of the four Squads.

4) In the folder you clicked on, you see a selection of pre-set avatars. Click on the avatar you like the most. That avatar will now be set as your account's avatar, and will be seen on all of your posts, unless you change your avatar again.

Changing Your Avatar to a Custom Avatar

For Step 3. The tab where you paste your copied image URL is circled in red, with red arrows pointing at it.

Before you can add a custom avatar, you must copy the URL of the image that you want to use as your avatar. If you have a Photobucket account, just simply upload the image you want to your account, and use the Direct-Link for that image. However, if you don't have a Photobucket account, the table below the instructions can help you with copying the URL of the image you want as your avatar.

1) With your image's URL copied, go to where Preferences is located on the forum page, and then hover your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

2) Click on "Change Avatar" in the small menu that appears after hovering your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

3) As shown in the image to the right, paste your copied image's URL into the "Custom Avatar" tab, and click "Use URL Avatar".

4) You are now using your image as a custom avatar. Please remember that the image's URL will only work for as long as the URL is not broken. If the URL is broken, the avatar will not appear.

Browsers Instructions on copying the URL of images

Internet Explorer

Right-click on the image that you want to use as your avatar, and click "Copy Shortcut."
Mozilla Firefox Right-click on the image that you want to use as your avatar, and click "Copy Image URL".
Google Chrome Right click on the image that you want to use as your avatar, and click "Copy image URL".
Safari Unknown at the moment.
Opera (Wii) Impossible. You'll have to type it in by hand, if you somehow have the URL of the image.
SHS AIO Right-click on the image that you want to use as your avatar, and click "Properties". Copy the "Address (URL)" shown on the Properties menu.

Adding to Your Signature

Signature

This is where you edit your signature's content. You can add text, images, and other things to customize your signature.

1) Go to where Preferences is located on the forum page, and then hover your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

2) Click on "Change Signature" in the small menu that appears after hovering your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

3) You should see a posting box, like the one in the image to the right, and like the one you use to make posts on the SHS forums. This box is where you write out whatever you want for your signature. Like on the forums, all BBCode work in the signature, so feel free to experiment with whatever you want. You can add text, images, spoiler tags, quote boxes, links (please do not advertise for non-SHS sites), and other things. It's exactly like making a post. BBCode is not discussed in detail in this FAQ; this FAQ assumes you know how to use BBCode. For details on BBCode, simply check the Full BBCode List.

4) Once you have added what you wanted to your signature in the posting box, click the "Edit Signature" button.

5) Now all the things you've added is part of your signature! Your new signature will be seen on every single one of your posts on the forums from now on, until you change your signature once again.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Your entire signature (text, spoiler tags, images, and everything else combined) must be below the signature limit of 500 pixels wide by 200 pixels high, as specified in Rule [1-13] of the Forum Charter. If your signature is over the limit, it may be deleted without warning, and a note from the staff will take its place to notify you of your signature's fate. Don't let that happen to your signature!

Member Title

MemberTitle

Where the "Member Title" option is located. To be able to see it, however, you will need to have reached 100 posts on the SHS forums first.

Your Member Title is a short description, located right below your avatar.

If you do not see the Member Title option where it is supposed to be found (as shown in the image to the right), that means you have not reached 100 posts yet on the forums. You are not allowed to modify your Member Title until you reach 100 posts. However, you can ask an administrator to manually modify your Member Title for you, regardless of your post count.

If you do have 100 posts, then here is how you add your Member Title yourself.

1) Go to where Preferences is located on the forum page, and then hover your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

2) Click on "Update Profile" in the small menu that appears after hovering your mouse's cursor over "Preferences".

3) The "Member Title" option is the very first option on the list, as shown in the image to the right. Type in whatever you want your title to be. You can only use text.

4) Once you've typed in what you want your Member Title to be, click the "Save Profile Changes" button.

5) Now you have a new Member Title, which will be seen below your avatar in every single post you make.
